Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium (formerly Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World) is a popular public aquarium located in Auckland, New Zealand. Opened in 1985, it is situated at 23 Tamaki Drive and was conceived by renowned New Zealand marine archaeologist and diver Kelly Tarlton (1937–1985). His innovative vision transformed the way people experience marine life.
The aquarium is housed in a series of disused sewage storage tanks, which were repurposed to create an impressive and immersive environment for both visitors and marine creatures. The use of advanced acrylic shaping technology allowed for the creation of curved tunnels, offering a more panoramic viewing experience compared to the flat panels used in earlier aquariums. This design innovation not only enhanced the visual appeal but also provided an uninterrupted, 360-degree view of sea life.
Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium was also one of the first aquariums to incorporate moving walkways, allowing visitors to glide slowly through the exhibits and enjoy the underwater world at a relaxed pace. Over the years, the aquarium has expanded its collection, adding new exhibits such as penguin encounters, shark tanks, and various marine life from around the globe. Today, it remains one of Auckland’s most beloved attractions, offering both educational and entertaining experiences for visitors of all ages.
