Matakana Farmers' Market

About Matakana Farmers' Market

Location: 2 Matakana Valley Road, Matakana Village When: Every Saturday, 8 am – 1 pm Entry: Free

Every Saturday morning, the courtyard of Matakana Village transforms into one of New Zealand’s most celebrated small-town food markets, and entry is completely free. The Matakana Farmers’ Market has been a fixture of the Matakana Coast for over two decades, drawing visitors from across Auckland and beyond with its exceptional range of locally grown and artisan-made produce. Whether you’re a serious foodie or simply looking for a relaxed way to start a Saturday, the market delivers a warm, unhurried experience that is hard to replicate anywhere else in the region.

The market operates on a strict locally grown and made philosophy, meaning every stall represents a genuine producer or maker from the surrounding region. Expect to find seasonal fruit and vegetables harvested within days of the market, free-range eggs and meat, artisan cheeses from local dairies, wood-fired breads and pastries, house-made jams and preserves, raw honey, cold-pressed olive oil, and a diverse range of street food spanning everything from wood-fired pizza and fresh seafood to Korean, Middle Eastern, and traditional New Zealand kai. The quality is consistently high, and the variety changes with the seasons, giving regular visitors a reason to come back every week.

A strong coffee culture runs through the market, with several specialty roasters and café operators setting up each Saturday. Craft beer and natural wine are also well represented, and a relaxed, convivial atmosphere means it’s perfectly acceptable to settle in with a drink and simply watch the market buzz around you. Local musicians perform most Saturdays, adding a lively soundtrack to the browsing experience.

The market is zero-waste, so bring your own bags, containers, and keep-cup — many stall holders will appreciate it and some offer small discounts for bringing your own packaging. The surrounding Matakana Village offers a wonderful extension to the market morning, with galleries, boutique clothing and homewares stores, a cinema, and some of the region’s best cafés and restaurants all within easy walking distance. The Matakana River Walk, a pleasant flat stroll along the riverbank, is also a lovely way to round out the morning.

Matakana Village sits at the heart of what is increasingly known as the Matakana Coast Wine Country. Several excellent wineries, craft breweries, and olive groves operate within a short drive, making the market a natural starting point for a full day’s exploration of the region. Brick Bay Sculpture Trail, the Sculptureum, and Tāwharanui Regional Park are all within 20 minutes and combine beautifully with a market morning for a complete day out.

The market runs year-round, rain or shine, though summer Saturdays between December and February are the busiest. Arriving before 9am is strongly recommended if you want first pick of produce and a relaxed experience — by 10am the car park can be full and the most popular stalls may have sold out of their best lines. Free parking is available in the surrounding streets and in the Matakana Country Park car park. From Auckland, take State Highway 1 north to Warkworth, then follow Matakana Road for approximately 10 km to the village. The drive takes around 75 minutes from the city centre.
