The Library

About The Library

Tucked up a flight of stairs above the bustle of Courtenay Place, The Library is one of Wellington’s most beloved hidden gems. Push open the door and you’ll find yourself in a warmly lit haven of book-lined shelves, intimate booths, and velvet couches — a world away from the street below.

The bar has built a devoted following since opening in 2009, and it’s easy to see why. Award-winning cocktails are the main event here, with an ever-changing menu of inventive, thoughtfully crafted drinks. The staff love getting to know what you’re in the mood for and will happily mix something bespoke. Pair your drink with one of their decadent desserts — the Earl Grey crème brûlée alone is worth the trip.

Regular live music adds to the atmosphere without ever overwhelming the conversation, and the mix of cosy nooks and larger spaces makes it equally perfect for a quiet date night or a group catch-up.

Book ahead on weekends — Wellingtonians know a good thing when they find it.

Best for: Date nights, cocktail lovers, late-night desserts
