Sky Tower Auckland

About Sky Tower Auckland

Address: Corner of Victoria & Federal Streets, Auckland CBD Open: Daily from 9:30am

Sky Tower Auckland is the city’s defining landmark — a slender needle of concrete and steel rising 328 metres above the CBD, visible from almost everywhere in the region and impossible to leave Auckland without visiting at least once. Completed in 1997, it remains the tallest freestanding structure in New Zealand and one of the most recognisable in the Southern Hemisphere.

The main draw for most visitors is the observation deck, reached in a glass-fronted lift that ascends 18 kilometres per hour, delivering you to 186 metres above street level in just 40 seconds. Up here, the 360-degree panorama stretches up to 80 kilometres on a clear day — across the Waitematā and Manukau Harbours, over the volcanic cones of Maungawhau/Mt Eden and Rangitoto, and out to the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. The Sky Deck on Level 60 pushes the experience to 220 metres, the highest public viewing platform in Auckland, with glass floor panels beneath your feet that reveal nothing but air and tarmac far below.

For those seeking something beyond the view, the Sky Tower is equally famous for its adrenaline experiences. The SkyJump — operated by AJ Hackett, New Zealand’s premier adventure specialists — sends you plummeting 192 metres straight down the side of the tower in a controlled wire fall, reaching 85 kilometres per hour in an 11-second rush. It is New Zealand’s highest jump. The SkyWalk takes a different approach: you step outside onto a 1.2-metre-wide platform circling the tower’s exterior at 192 metres, secured by a full body harness but with nothing between you and the Auckland skyline in every direction.

Dining at the Sky Tower is an experience in itself. The Orbit 360° restaurant completes a full rotation every hour, meaning no two minutes of your meal offer quite the same view. A café and bar offer lighter options for those who prefer their vertigo with coffee.

Sky Tower is situated at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets, a short walk from Britomart transport hub and at the centre of the SkyCity Auckland complex. Tickets for the observation deck can be purchased on the day or booked online in advance.

We took our two girls for the skywalk around the outside and they loved it! My wife… not so much!
