Goldsborough Gold Mining Area

About Goldsborough Gold Mining Area

Location: Goldsborough Road, 16km North of Hokitika | Accessibility: Moderate (Gravel & Bush Tracks) | Duration: 2–3 hours | Cost: Free

Goldsborough was once a thundering heart of industry during the 1860s, a bustling township of thousands of miners seeking their fortunes in the Waimea goldfields. Today, it has been reclaimed by the lush West Coast rainforest, offering an atmospheric and completely free visitor experience. It is frequently cited as one of the best top things to do for those who want to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the raw history of the region.

The area serves as a living museum where the scars of hydraulic sluicing are still visible. For the adventurous, the network of walking track options is the primary draw. These trails lead you past massive tailing heaps—stacks of stones hand-piled by miners—and through impressive tunnels carved directly into the hillside. One of the highlights is the Tunnel Terrace Walk, which takes you through a 50-meter-long tailrace tunnel used to carry water and debris away from the mining face. Be sure to bring a torch (flashlight) to navigate these dark passages safely, as they offer a chillingly authentic glimpse into the working conditions of the 19th century.

Beyond the hiking, Goldsborough is one of the few places where you can still legally pan for gold for free in the designated public fossicking area. While you are unlikely to find a nugget that rivals the famous “Honourable Roddy” found in nearby Ross, many visitors still manage to find tiny, shimmering flakes of “color” in the bed of the Waimea Creek. It is an engaging activity for families, teaching children the patience and technique required by the pioneers.

The site also features a peaceful Department of Conservation (DOC) campsite situated in a grassy clearing surrounded by towering native trees. Even if you aren’t staying overnight, the picnic facilities are free to use and provide a serene backdrop for lunch.

The air here is thick with the scent of damp moss and the songs of native Bellbirds and Fantails. By visiting Goldsborough, you aren’t just looking at history; you are walking through it, feeling the damp cold of the tunnels and the rush of the mountain streams that once powered a global gold rush. It remains a quintessential West Coast destination that perfectly balances heritage, adventure, and natural beauty.
