Omaha Beach is widely regarded as one of the finest beaches in the Auckland region — a long, sweeping arc of white sand stretching nearly four kilometres along the eastern Matakana Coast, facing out across the Hauraki Gulf toward the dramatic silhouette of Little Barrier Island (Hauturu-o-Toi) on the horizon. Free to visit and accessible year-round, Omaha Beach draws swimmers, surfers, kayakers, and families from across Auckland and beyond, offering a quintessential New Zealand beach experience within 90 minutes of the city.
The beach faces northeast, which gives it a reliable surf break at the northern end that has made Omaha a firm favourite with surfers of all levels. The southern end of the beach is more sheltered and calmer, making it the preferred spot for families with young children and less confident swimmers. The long, gently sloping sandy bottom means the water shallows gradually, and the beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the peak summer season from late November through to Easter. Swimming between the flags is strongly recommended, as rips can develop along certain sections of the beach depending on wind and swell conditions.
Beyond swimming and surfing, Omaha Beach rewards those who simply want to walk. The full length of the beach from the southern estuary to the northern rocky headland takes around an hour each way at a relaxed pace, passing through a series of distinct environments — from the calm, sheltered estuary mouth where the Tāwharanui Peninsula rises dramatically across the water, to the more exposed northern end where the surf is at its most powerful and the views out to sea are at their most expansive. Early mornings are particularly special, when the beach is at its quietest and the low sun catches the water in a way that makes the whole stretch glow.
The estuary at the southern end of Omaha Beach is a wonderful natural feature in its own right. The shallow, sheltered waters of the Omaha estuary are a haven for birdlife, with herons, kingfishers, variable oystercatchers, and godwits regularly spotted along the margins. The estuary is also a popular spot for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, with the calm water making it accessible for beginners and young children. At low tide, the sandbars and channels of the estuary are fascinating to explore on foot, and the views back across the water to the beach and the Tāwharanui Peninsula beyond are among the most scenic on the entire Matakana Coast.
The northern headland at the top of the beach marks the boundary of the Tāwharanui Marine Reserve, and the rocky reef platforms here are excellent for snorkelling when the sea is calm, with good populations of snapper, blue maomao, and other reef fish visible in clear water. Rock pools along the headland reward patient exploration at low tide, and the elevated walking track above the headland offers panoramic views north along the coast toward Leigh and Goat Island.
Omaha Village, set back from the beach behind the dunes, has a well-stocked dairy, a bottle store, and a café, making it easy to pick up supplies for a beach day without having to travel far. The nearby Matakana Village, just 15 minutes inland, offers the famous Saturday farmers’ market, excellent restaurants, galleries, and boutique shopping for those looking to extend their visit into a full day out on the Matakana Coast.
From Auckland, take State Highway 1 north to Warkworth, then follow Matakana Road to Matakana Village and continue on Omaha Flats Road to the beach. Free parking is available in several car parks behind the dunes, though these fill quickly on summer weekends — arriving before 9am is recommended during January and February. Dogs are permitted on the beach outside of the designated swimming area and during approved hours — check Auckland Council’s website for the current rules before visiting.
