Haruru Falls Walk

About Haruru Falls Walk

Haruru Falls, near Paihia | Nature Walk | Easy | 1–2 hours return | Free entry If you’re after free walks in the Bay of Islands that genuinely surprises you, look no further than the Haruru Falls Walk. Just a short drive — or a lovely walk — from central Paihia, these falls are shaped like a horseshoe, arcing across a wide basalt ledge where the Waitangi River drops into a swirling pool below. They’re not enormous, but they’re beautiful, and the setting feels wonderfully untouched given how close to town you are. The Waitangi River walk to the falls is one of the most peaceful in the region.

Starting from the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, the path follows the river upstream through a lush mangrove estuary and wetland. The boardwalk section winds right at water level through the mangroves — spot eels, wading birds, and tūī calling from the pohutukawa overhead. On a still morning the reflections in the water are stunning.

The full Haruru Falls Paihia walk from the Treaty Grounds takes around 90 minutes one way. If you’d prefer to drive, there’s a carpark right at the falls that cuts the trip to a five-minute stroll. Either way, the falls reward the effort.

Haruru Falls is free to visit and open year-round — one of the best family walks in Northland. There’s no swimming at the base of the falls (the current is deceptively strong), but the grassy picnic area nearby is a lovely spot to slow down and soak it all in. Combine it with a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds for a full and deeply satisfying day out that covers both New Zealand’s history and its natural beauty.
