Wheelchair accessible beach New Zealand — it’s a phrase a lot of travellers type into Google and get frustrated by. The results are usually vague and scattered. But Freyberg Beach in Wellington is a genuine exception, and it deserves way more attention than it gets.
Tucked into the sheltered southern end of Wellington Harbour on Oriental Parade, Freyberg is just a 10-minute stroll (or roll) from Te Papa Museum and the waterfront. It’s calm, it’s sandy, and as of early 2026 it’s got brand new beach matting — a firm, non-slip pathway that runs right down to the waterline. Getting from the boardwalk to the water is now actually doable, not just technically possible.
The beach wheelchair lives at Freyberg Pool, literally next door. It’s a Hippocampe — the kind with big balloon tyres designed for sand — and you can hire it by calling 04 801 4530. The pool team will sort you out, and then you’re off. The concrete ramp connecting the boardwalk to the beach mat means there are no awkward transitions, no hunting for a solid patch of ground.
Once you’re on the beach, you’ve got a gorgeous view of the harbour, the hills, and the Carter Fountain. The water is sheltered and usually calm — on a good Wellington day (they do exist), it’s genuinely lovely for a swim. There’s a swimming raft and a diving platform for those who want them, and the beach sits in a small bay that tends to stay warmer than the exposed south coast.
Parking is available along Oriental Parade and near the pool, and accessible toilets are right there on site. Cafés and restaurants are within easy reach along the waterfront — you won’t need to travel far for a coffee or a bite after your beach visit. The whole area is flat and easy to navigate, which makes Freyberg one of those rare spots where the planning overhead is genuinely low.
One thing worth noting: the beach matting is seasonal (typically October through April) and the wheelchair booking system is being upgraded, so it pays to call ahead. Wellington’s weather also has a reputation, so check the forecast and aim for a nor’wester day when the city sits in sunshine. When it comes together, though, Freyberg Beach is exactly what an accessible beach should be — straightforward, well set up, and actually enjoyable.
