The Hobbiton Movie Set is a significant location featured in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, serving as the iconic town of Hobbiton in the Shire. It is located on a family-run farm about 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of Hinuera and 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) southwest of Matamata in the Waikato region of New Zealand. Today, it has become a popular Tolkien-themed tourism destination, offering visitors a guided tour of the meticulously recreated set.
The journey to creating Hobbiton began in 1998 when director Peter Jackson, during an aerial search for the perfect filming locations, first discovered the Alexander Farm. He immediately recognized the area’s unique charm, describing it as “like a slice of ancient England.” Set Decorator Alan Lee was equally impressed, noting that the location’s rolling hills appeared as though Hobbits had already begun their underground homes. The farm’s natural features also played a key role in the decision, with part of the site containing a lake with a long arm that could easily be transformed into a river for the films.
After extensive work, the site was transformed into the picturesque Hobbiton that fans know and love. The set includes the famous Hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and other beloved locations from the films. Today, it attracts thousands of visitors annually who come to experience the magic of Middle-earth. In addition to the tours, the site also offers immersive experiences like feasts at the Green Dragon Inn and themed events. The lasting legacy of the set continues to bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life for fans from around the globe.
