Hokitika Glow Worm Dell

About Hokitika Glow Worm Dell

Location: State Highway 6, North Hokitika | Accessibility: Fully Accessible | Duration: 15–30 mins | Cost: Free

The Hokitika Glow Worm Dell is a rare treasure: a naturally occurring colony of Arachnocampa Luminosa that is completely free to the public and incredibly easy to reach. Located right on the edge of town, this limestone overhang becomes a subterranean galaxy once the sun goes down.

It is widely considered one of the best top things to do for families and budget travelers. The walk from the roadside parking area is a mere 50 meters, making it one of the most accessible walking track options in New Zealand for seeing these creatures.

Unlike the famous caves in Waitomo, this is an outdoor “dell,” meaning you can enjoy the experience without a boat or a guide. The best time to visit is at least an hour after sunset; ensure you turn off your flashlights and phone screens as you approach to allow your eyes to adjust and to avoid disturbing the worms.

Once your vision settles, you will see thousands of tiny blue-green lights clinging to the ferns and rock walls. These are the larvae of the fungus gnat, using their bioluminescence to lure prey into sticky silk threads. It is a silent, awe-inspiring visitor experience that feels worlds away from the nearby highway.

Because it is a fragile ecosystem, visitors are reminded to stay on the path and never touch the glowing walls. It’s a perfect, short night-time adventure that costs nothing but offers a lifetime of memories on the West Coast.
