Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve

About Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve

Location: 33km inland from Hokitika | Accessibility: Wheelchair/Buggy Accessible | Duration: 1 hour | Cost: Free

The Hokitika Gorge is arguably the most iconic natural wonder on the West Coast, famous for its vibrant, milky-blue water that looks almost painted. This incredible colour is the result of “rock flour”— glacial sediment suspended in the water. The site has recently undergone significant upgrades, making it one of the most accessible top things to do in the region.

A well-maintained walking track leads visitors through podocarp forest to several viewing platforms. The highlight for many is the impressive swing bridge that hangs directly over the rushing blue water, providing a perfect vantage point for photography. The track is a loop, covering approximately 2km, and is largely accessible for strollers and wheelchairs up to the first major viewing point.

Beyond the visuals, the gorge offers a sensory experience of the New Zealand wilderness. You’ll hear the calls of Tui and Fantails in the canopy while feeling the cool mist from the Hokitika River. While the water looks inviting, it is dangerously cold and swift, so swimming is not recommended. For the best experience, visit on a sunny day when the light hits the glacial silt to produce the most intense turquoise hues. Sandflies can be persistent here, so wearing repellent is a wise move for any visitor. This destination perfectly captures the rugged, pristine beauty that defines the West Coast of New Zealand.
