Sculptureum is one of New Zealand’s most unforgettable cultural experiences, with more than 800 works of art spread across six art galleries and three expansive sculpture gardens. Located just five minutes from Matakana Village and an hour north of Auckland, it is a world-class destination that consistently surprises visitors with the scale, quality, and diversity of its collection — and with the sheer ambition of what has been created in a rural New Zealand setting.
Works from around the world including pieces by Picasso, Chagall, Rodin, Chihuly, and Cézanne create an art experience unlike any other in New Zealand. The collection spans painting, sculpture, glass, installation, and mixed media, moving fluidly between classical and contemporary, between intimate and monumental. The result is a journey through art history and artistic expression that feels genuinely curated rather than assembled, with each space and garden thoughtfully designed to create specific moods and encounters.
The Garden of Creative Diversity leads visitors through 1.1 km of classical and reflective garden space into six indoor art galleries, each with a distinct theme. Moving through the galleries is an experience of constant surprise — the scale and quality of what is encountered around each corner consistently exceeds expectations, and the thematic variety between spaces prevents the visual fatigue that can set in at less thoughtfully curated collections. The famous Dale Chihuly glass chandelier is among the most photographed works in the collection, its cascading colour and light creating a moment of genuine spectacle amid the otherwise contemplative gallery sequence.
Animals are also part of the experience at Sculptureum, with vibrant exotic birds in five aviaries and resident rabbits and turtles bringing the grounds to life in charming and unexpected ways. The aviaries are particularly popular with younger visitors and add a lively, sensory dimension to the gardens that distinguishes the Sculptureum experience from a conventional art venue. The grounds are planted with statement trees, seasonal flowering plants, and carefully chosen landscape features that change character across the seasons, making repeat visits rewarding throughout the year.
Sculptureum is also home to a 14-acre award-winning vineyard, producing exceptional wines that are available to taste and purchase on-site. The vineyard produces chardonnay, cabernet merlot, and rosé under the Sculptureum label, and the quality reflects the maritime climate and volcanic soils of the Matakana Coast wine region.
Rothko Restaurant, named after the abstract expressionist painter, rounds out the Sculptureum experience with a creative dining concept built around wood-fire cooking and bold Filipino-influenced flavours. The menu changes with the seasons to reflect the best available local produce, and the setting — overlooking the sculpture gardens and vineyard — is among the most distinctive dining environments in the Auckland region. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly on weekends. Allow a minimum of two to three hours for the galleries and gardens alone, and considerably longer if dining.
From Matakana Village, follow Matakana Valley Road and turn onto Omu Road — the entrance is clearly signposted and takes approximately five minutes by car. Ample parking is available on-site. Umbrellas and sun parasols are available for use during inclement weather, making Sculptureum a genuinely all-weather destination and an excellent choice for days when the beach or walking tracks are less appealing.
