Sheepworld

About Sheepworld

Sheepworld Farm Park is one of the most enduringly popular family attractions in the Auckland region — a genuine working farm that has been welcoming visitors for decades with an honest, hands-on encounter with New Zealand rural life. Set on 11 acres in the scenic Dome Valley just four kilometres north of Warkworth and 45 minutes from Auckland, Sheepworld sits conveniently on State Highway 1, making it one of the most accessible farm experiences in the country and a natural stop on any road trip north toward the Bay of Islands.

The centrepiece of any visit to Sheepworld is the live sheep shearing and dog show, a daily demonstration that never fails to impress visitors who have never seen either skill performed up close. The shearing show features an experienced shearer removing a full fleece in minutes with practiced efficiency, while explaining the wool industry’s central role in shaping New Zealand’s economic and cultural history. The working dog demonstration is equally captivating — a skilled farmer directing dogs around the paddock using a series of whistled commands that seem almost impossibly precise, herding sheep into pens with a fluency that makes the whole process look effortless. For urban visitors and international tourists alike, it offers a genuine window into the pastoral New Zealand that lies behind the picturesque green hills visible from the motorway.

Beyond the shows, Sheepworld’s farm park is home to a wonderfully diverse collection of animals that visitors can meet, hand-feed, and interact with at their own pace throughout the day. Sheep, of course, are the stars — with several breeds represented including some that visitors can get hands-on with during the daily guided feedout tour. But the animal cast extends well beyond sheep, with goats, donkeys, pigs, alpacas, emus, deer, rabbits, and chickens all resident on the farm and almost universally enthusiastic about receiving attention and food from visitors. During spring and early summer, bottle-feeding lambs is one of the most popular experiences on offer — a universally disarming activity that tends to be as memorable for adults as it is for children.

The Eco Discovery Trail adds a quiet, contemplative dimension to the Sheepworld experience that surprises many first-time visitors. The 400-metre loop walk winds through a beautiful section of native bush, passing under mature trees alive with birdsong and featuring informative panels about native flora and fauna along the way. It’s a welcome counterpoint to the activity of the farm and a reminder of what much of New Zealand looked like before European settlement. The trail is accessible for most fitness levels and takes around 20 minutes at a relaxed pace.

A spacious, well-appointed café serves food and coffee throughout the day, with indoor and outdoor seating and views over the farm that make it a genuinely pleasant place to linger over lunch. The gift shop carries a strong selection of quality New Zealand-made wool and sheepskin products — sheepskin rugs, possum-merino knitwear, wool blankets — alongside the usual range of souvenirs, and the quality is generally well above average for a tourist attraction shop.

Sheepworld’s social mission adds an extra dimension to any visit. All profits from the farm go toward supporting young people in the local community through Springboard, a youth development organisation, meaning that every ticket purchased directly funds something meaningful. Open daily from 9am, with the farm park open until 4pm and the café serving until 3pm. Shearing shows run daily at 11am in summer and Thursday to Sunday in winter. From Matakana, head west toward Warkworth and continue on State Highway 1 north for approximately 4 km — Sheepworld is clearly signposted on the left.
